Good morning,

What is your opinion about those people claiming to remove the evil eye?

I don’t trust them and it seems to me more like something that is evil, although some might actually do it in good faith…..

This thing, in general, has deep roots and many do believe in it, but I really don’t like any of this.

Anyhow, waiting for your answer, I wish you a great day in the Lord’s peace!

The Priest’s answer

My dear,

  1. I don’t think anything good about the people who remove the evil eye.

On the contrary, I firmly discourage anyone to go to such people.

  1. The reason is simple:  in the event someone has been hit by a curse, by going to these people he would make the situation worse, even though at the beginning it might appear to have found some remedy.
  1. In the Old Testament we can find harsh bans against sorcerers.

For them  even the death penalty is recommended : “ A man or a woman who acts as

a medium or clairvoyant shall be put to death.  They shall be stoned to death; their

bloodguilt is upon them” (Leviticus 20, 27).

  1. There is the strictest order not to turn to these people:  “Do not turn to ghosts or

consult spirits, by which you will be defiled. I, the Lord, am your God” (Lv 19,31).

“Let there not be found among you anyone who causes their son or daughter to pass

through the fire, or practices divination, or is a soothsayer, auger, or sorcerer,

or who casts spells, consults ghosts and spirits, or seeks oracles from the dead.

Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the Lord, and because of such

abominations the Lord, your God, is dispossessing them before you” (Deuteronomy

      18,10-12).

  1. In the OLd Testament turning to sorcerers to even receive some benefits was like opening the door to the devil and placing oneself under his influence.

But the devil, like the Lord has said, when he comes, he comes only “to steal and

      slaughter and destroy” (John 10,10).

6.The only person to turn to in case of evil eye or curse is the priest confessor.

This is because the Sacrament of Confession, considered since the beginning like a

second Baptism, is a form of exorcism.

Instilling the grace, subtract from the influence of the evil one and place the person

     under God’s protection.

     7. Obviously the confession should not be done as a magic ritual, similar to someone

going to seek help from the sorcerers.

Instead, it is about newly redirecting someone’s life toward God and eliminating

everything that is not according to His will, every situations that is morally irregular and

disordered.  That is to say, the sin.

In one word, one must approach the confession to change life because to remain in sin,

in irregular and disordered situations, is the same thing as to remain under the

     influence of our enemy.

Saint Thomas decidedly states that with the mortal sin one submit oneself to the devil’s

     influence.

     8. Finally, I like to remember the promise that God has done to those who live

according to His will and in His grace that:  “Though a thousand fall at your side, ten

thousand at your right hand, near your it shall not come” (Psalms 91,7).

Also: “No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent.  For he commands

his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go” (Psalm 91, 10-11).

     9. Particularly I like to remember the promise done by God through the apostle Saint

James: “So submit yourselves to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you”

     (James 4,7).

One resists against the sin by eliminating it. And if one should find oneself entangled by

it, you free yourself through the sacramental confession.

    10.  Just like you yourself have reminded, unfortunately, too many people continue to

turn to sorcerers to be freed by evil eyes and curses without knowing that by doing so,

they place themselves under the influence of the devil and unknowingly opening the

door to his eventual malefic actions.

I bless you, I wish you the best and I will remember you in my prayers.
